We began our Mexican adventure on Monday in the rural village of Ahome. Ahome was a 45 minute drive North from the Los Mochis airport. Located in the state of Sinaloa with a population of about 5,000, it is similar to a farming community in the California central valley, in that this region produces much of the food for the country. This place is definitely not on the average tourist itenerary! The people in town stared at us as if they had never seen Americans before.
Our tour provider David Warner has built a lodge in Ahome from which he bases dove and quail hunting tours four months of the year, and also houses his Copper Canyon tours. What we liked about this tour was 1) that there was no wasted time on buses when we were not at base arriving or departing, we were in a canyon hotel or on the train and 2) the hotels and food were absolutely first rate!
